Why it matters

Professional arborist assessment protects your trees and your property.

Why have an arborist assess your trees?

Trees are long-lived assets, but they're also dynamic, living systems that change over time. Defects, disease, and structural weaknesses often aren't visible to the untrained eye. A certified arborist brings the training and methodology to identify risks before they become emergencies, protecting people, structures, and the trees themselves. Whether you're managing a single heritage oak or an entire urban canopy, independent professional assessment gives you clear, defensible information to make smart decisions.

When to bring in a consulting arborist

Some situations call for independent, documented expertise. You likely need a consulting arborist when you're:

  • Buying, selling, or developing property with significant trees
  • Planning construction or grading near existing trees
  • Assessing storm damage, decline, or a tree you suspect is hazardous
  • Meeting a permit, county ordinance, or CEQA report requirement
  • Resolving disputes, insurance claims, or liability concerns
  • Managing heritage, landmark, or protected trees

My story

From the canopy to the consulting table.

My journey into arboriculture didn't start in an office; it started in the canopy. As a kid, I was drawn to the forest, finding my first sense of perspective and belonging high up in the branches. That early love for climbing naturally evolved into a career, moving from the hands-on intensity of residential tree care to the complex demands of commercial vegetation management.

As I worked across the industry, I realized that physical skill was only half the equation. I wanted to understand the science behind the trees I was working with. That drive led me to pursue my ISA Certified Arborist credential, marking a shift from simply working on trees to truly managing them. Through the West Coast chapters, I immersed myself in the latest research and best practices, continuously refining my technical expertise.

Earning my Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) and becoming a Utility Specialist were the next natural steps, allowing me to bridge the gap between complex tree health and essential infrastructure safety. Today, Radion Resources is the culmination of that path. It is built on a foundation of deep field experience and a relentless commitment to ongoing education, ensuring that every tree I consult on is managed as the vital, living resource it is.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about how a consulting arborist works, what reports involve, and how we help with permitting across the greater Sacramento area. Don't see your question? Get in touch and we'll respond within one business day.

What does a consulting arborist do?
A consulting arborist provides independent, science-based assessment, documentation, and recommendations about trees — without selling tree work. That includes tree risk assessments, arborist reports, tree appraisals, pre-construction tree protection planning, and liaison with local agencies. The goal is to give property owners, developers, municipalities, and attorneys clear, defensible information they can act on.
Do you remove trees?
No. Radion Resources is an independent consulting practice, not a tree-removal company. Because we don't perform or sell removals or pruning, our assessments stay unbiased — we have no financial stake in recommending work and aren't trying to sell you tree services. If a tree does need attention, we document exactly what's warranted so you can hire a qualified crew with confidence.
Why do I need an arborist report?
Many cities and counties require an arborist report before issuing permits for construction, development, or the removal of protected trees. Reports are also commonly needed for real estate transactions, insurance claims, CEQA review, and legal disputes. A professional report gives the reviewing agency — and you — defensible, standards-based findings rather than guesswork.
Do you assist with permitting?
Yes. We help property owners navigate and coordinate with the relevant county or city throughout the permitting process — preparing the required arborist documentation and acting as a liaison with the prospective reviewing agency so your application moves forward smoothly.
What is a tree risk assessment?
A tree risk assessment is a structured evaluation of how likely a tree is to fail, how likely that failure is to strike a target such as people or property, and what the consequences would be. Following the ISA's TRAQ methodology, it produces a defensible risk rating and practical mitigation options — so you can make informed decisions instead of reacting after something goes wrong.
What's included in an arborist report?
A typical report identifies and inventories the trees on site, documents their species, size, condition, and structure, evaluates any risks or constraints, and provides clear recommendations — all referenced to recognized standards such as ANSI A300 and ISA Best Management Practices. The exact scope is tailored to your project, whether that's a single heritage tree or an entire development site.
Do you supervise tree crews during the work?
Yes. We can provide on-site oversight while tree work is carried out, ensuring crews follow proper pruning practices and adhere to ANSI A300 standards and ISA Best Management Practices. As an independent consultant, our role is to protect the long-term health and structure of your trees — verifying the work is done correctly rather than performing it ourselves.
Do I need a permit to remove a protected tree?
Often, yes. Many jurisdictions in the region — including Sacramento County and surrounding cities and counties — regulate the removal of protected, heritage, or landmark trees, and removing one without authorization can carry significant penalties. The specific rules vary by location; we can help you determine what applies to your property and prepare any documentation the agency requires.
What areas do you serve?
Radion Resources serves the greater Sacramento area, including Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Butte, and Amador counties. If you're nearby but not certain you're in range, just reach out and ask.
How much does an arborist report cost?
Cost depends on the scope — the number of trees, the type of assessment, site complexity, and the level of documentation your situation requires. Every project is quoted individually, so you only pay for what you need. Send a few details and we'll provide a clear estimate.
How long does a report take?
Turnaround depends on scope, site access, and current workload, but most reports are delivered within one to two weeks of the site visit. If you're working against a permit or transaction deadline, let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate it.
